Before your next summer road trip, you should make sure that everything about your vehicle is road ready. That means getting a complete tune-up, oil change, repair any issues such as cracked or chipped glass and make sure that your emergency roadside kit is prepared and stocked with supplies. There is one thing that many people may forget about though when they are getting ready for their trip, their tires.

Before your trip make sure that you also get full tire service. This can help ensure that your vacation is not only safe but that you don’t have any expensive unexpected tire repair issues arise while away from home. When you take your car in for a tire service there are three major factors that should be checked. Let’ look at them now:

1. Tread Wear Pattern

All tires experience a unique tread wear pattern that is related to the vehicle that you drive and the type of driving that you do regularly. If your tread wear pattern is excessive, however, it can indicate a steering or suspension problem and may have shortened the life of your tires, or compromised their safe stopping distance values. If the tread wear pattern on your tires is excessively uneven then the tires should be replaced. Of course, correcting the cause of the excessive wear is vital!

2. Tread Wear (depth of tread)

Again, this is a normal part of tire usage, but if the tire tread has worn to a point that it is not deep enough to properly grip the road surface or to move rain or mud away from the driving path, then the tire should be replaced. This can also affect the proper handling of your vehicle and add significant length to your stopping distance. Other issues that can cause excessive tread depth wear are brakes that are not operating fully. If your technician points out that your tread depth is excessively worn, then you should also let them check your braking system.

3. Health of Rubber

If the rubber that makes up your tires is dry, cracked, peeling, or faded, then it could indicate that the tires are too old to safely be used any longer. The tire rubber should be smooth, bright, deeply colored, and firm. Unhealthy rubber can lead to sudden dangerous loss of pressure or even a blowout. If such a blowout were to occur at top highway speeds then the results could be catastrophic. Do not under any circumstances take this issue lightly, blowouts are one of the leading causes of fatal car accidents on the nation’s highways every year. If your tires' rubber health is not up to par, be sure to replace your tires before taking your summer road trip.

If the tire repair technician feels that any of these factors are not within safe operating parameters then you should not take chances. They will be happy to help you select new tires to replace the worn-out ones. It’s always recommended that you replace all four tires at once for a maximum safety. If there are issues with your vehicle that has led to these issues the technician can also discuss with you how those can be corrected before taking off on your trip.

Don’t take chances. Let your upcoming summer road trip be a chance to make lasting memories, not an opportunity for a roadside emergency to create headaches that can turn your trip into a nightmare.

Be sure to consider these 3 tire service tips before leaving on your road trip. Ask your tire repair experts to check air pressure, tread wear & condition of the rubber.
