Don't miss out on your summer road trip with an inconvenient and frustrating automotive repair. Check out the six pre-trip automotive service suggestions below to help ensure that you arrive safely at your summer destination.
- Tire Pressure and Tread – Most vehicles have a sticker located on the driver's side which lists a tire pressure chart. Make certain all tires are inflated properly and that the tread depth is adequate. Remember the spare!
- Lights -- Inspect all exterior and interior lights and replace any that are burned out. If you're not able to replace them yourself, ask for help at your automotive service center.
- Windshield Wipers & Horn – Check the condition of the wiper blades (no streaking or squeaking) and replace them to make sure you have clear visibility in the event of a summer rainstorm. Make sure the horn is working too.
- Parking Brake -- Test the parking brake to make sure it is working properly. If it isn't, don't start out on your trip until you get to an automotive repair shop for help.
- Vehicle Load – The sticker on the door also lists the maximum vehicle capacity, which means the weight of the vehicle along with the combined weight of passengers and cargo. If you want to save cost on fuel and tires, stay on or below the recommended load capacity.
- Car Jack & Tools -- Make sure you have the appropriate tools and car jack in the trunk for changing flat tires, and other minor issues.
Be sure to schedule an automotive repair if you have found any issues that are deficient. Unexpected vehicle problems could still happen, but you will at least have done your part to be prepared.
