Brake Service: Don’t Lose Your Grip!
Most drivers know their vehicle well enough that they will notice when something's not quite right, especially when it relates to the braking system. Because this system is a vehicle's most crucial safety item, regular brake service is important. However, like most other components of a vehicle, the various parts will wear out over time due to your driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type, or quality of material, and you may eventually need a complete brake replacement.
Familiarize yourself with a few warning signs and schedule a brake service if you notice the signs below:
- Noise when stepping on the brake pedal.
A little squeaking when the brakes are wet or when you drive first thing in the morning is normal until they warm up. However, pay attention to how long these sounds persist. If you hear a consistent squeak or whistling sound, or the sound of metal grinding on metal every time you step on the pedal, schedule a brake service as soon as possible. If you keep driving with these conditions, you will probably be causing more damage to your braking system, leading to a costly brake replacement.
- The car pulls to one side during braking.
This could be caused by one of many things—uneven wear, a problem in the calipers or lines, or even an alignment or suspension issue. Schedule a brake service right away. Stopping shouldn't cause your car to pull to one side, whatever the reason.
- The pedal pulsates.
This is another issue that is "sometimes" normal behavior—Anti-Lock Braking systems will pulsate a little under hard braking. Any unusual pulsating that you didn't notice before may be cause for a brake service. It could be the rotors have become bent or warped, leading to weird pulsations while stopping. This problem can be corrected fairly simply and inexpensively.
- The pedal feels "mushy."
Mushy or spongy pedals could indicate air in the lines, which means the system will need to be "bled." But this could also be a symptom of low fluid, and that's a big, red alert. Schedule a brake service immediately! Don't drive until the cause of the issue has been found.
Remember: Brakes are the No. 1 most important safety feature of your vehicle so take note of any issues very seriously.
