In today’s society, many people are conscious of the quality of the air they breathe, especially if they live in a large city.  Routine car service will help diminish and clean the fumes emitted from a vehicle’s exhaust system.  Along with saving the environment and natural resources, basic car service will help your car last longer, increase its operating efficiency, enhance driving safety, and save you money on unplanned and costly car repair.

For the environmentally-conscious driver, here are a few car service tips to keep in mind:

  • Tires. Tires that are under-inflated, wheels out of alignment or that have lost their balance makes the engine work harder to push the vehicle down the road.  This results in decreased fuel efficiency and tires that wear out faster than normal.
  • Speed.  Fuel efficiency also decreases significantly when driving over 55 mph.  Keep a steady speed (use your cruise control), and avoid fast accelerations and jerky stops.
  • Avoid excessive idling.  With today’s advanced automotive technology, 10-minute warm-ups on cold mornings are not really necessary.
  • Remove excess weight. Less weight means better mileage.  Reduce drag by storing luggage in the trunk rather than on the roof.
  • Consolidate trips.  Consolidate your daily errands, join a carpool, and try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stop-and-go conditions.
  • Engine service.  A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30%. Follow the maintenance service schedules, replacing belts, filters, and fluids as recommended in your owner’s manual.
  • Properly working A/C.  Air conditioners should be serviced only by a technician certified to handle refrigerants.  The Environmental Protection Agency states that almost one-third of the gases released into the atmosphere come from vehicle air conditioners.
  • Proper disposal of used automotive parts.  Many car repair shops are happy to help you properly dispose of used motor oil, anti-freeze, worn-out tires, and old batteries.  Or call your city or county government for recycling sites.

Remember: Make sure our environment and natural resources are safe for generations to come by maintaining an efficiently operating vehicle with regular car service.  Also, don’t put off taking care of a necessary car repair.
