If you want your current vehicle to last you a while longer, be sure to keep up with routine engine service.  An engine repair specialist can give you expert advice if you are starting to notice car problems.  Early diagnosis of pending problems can prevent major engine repair.

When you see the “Check Engine” light illuminate with no explanation, it is time to take action.  This light is your “caution” signal.  If you can still operate your vehicle, get it into your auto repair shop for a diagnosis as soon as possible.  A small computer will be plugged underneath your dashboard to indicate where a problem may be lurking under the hood.

The most common problems that cause the check engine light to come on are:

  1. Oxygen Sensor – The oxygen sensor monitors the unburned oxygen from the exhaust, and how much fuel is burned. A faulty sensor does not provide the right data to the computer, reducing gas mileage and increasing emissions.
  2. Gas Cap – If the gas cap is loose or cracked, fuel vapors leak out and can throw the whole fuel system off, also reducing gas mileage and increasing emissions. You may simply need to replace the gas cap.
  3. Catalytic Converter – The catalytic converter reduces exhaust gases by converting carbon monoxide and other harmful materials into harmless compounds. If it starts to fail, you will notice a decrease in gas mileage or your car may not accelerate when you step on the gas. Replacing a catalytic converter will be an expensive engine repair.
  4. Mass Airflow Sensor – This sensor tells the car's computer to add the proper amount of fuel based on the air coming through to the engine. A faulty sensor can increase emissions, cause the car to stall, and decrease gas mileage.  Most mass airflow sensors fail because of an improperly installed or clogged air filter.
  5. Spark Plugs and Wires – The spark plug seals the combustion chamber and provides a gap for a spark to jump across and initiate combustion in the engine.  When the plugs are worn out or dirty, they will misfire. Replacing sparks plugs is an easy fix.

Don’t leave the light on!  Take care of needed engine repair as soon as possible.  Contact our ASE-certified technicians at Rebel Automotive for more information about engine service and to schedule an appointment.  Our auto shop serves vehicle owners in Henderson, NV, Las Vegas, NV, and North Las Vegas, NV.
