Most drivers understand that the braking system is the most important safety feature of your vehicle. Most drivers also understand that brakes require regular service. However, it may be confusing to some drivers as to how often should car brakes be replaced. They can’t find a time or mileage limit for replacing brakes listed in their service manual.

So how often should car brakes be replaced, you ask? Here is a brief description of how brakes work and the normal wear and tear they receive on a daily basis:

  • All vehicles have front and rear brakes—the front brakes use rotors (large metal disks) as a braking mechanism and the rear brakes may use either rotors or drums. Your mechanic can let you know what kind of brakes are on your vehicle.
  • As the brake pedal is engaged, the brake fluid is pushed through a series of tubes to the brakes themselves.
  • This pressurized brake fluid activates the calipers in the front tires, pushing the brake pads against the rotor, and creating the friction that slows down the tires.
  • The pressurized brake fluid enters the wheel cylinder inside the drum of the back tires, pushing the brake shoes around the rotating drum, and slowing it until it stops.

Most mechanics recommend an inspection of the braking system about every 10,000 miles, or even at every oil change. This allows your mechanic to visually check the condition of the pads and rotors to determine how much longer they will last. If it’s time for a needed brake repair, it could mean that just the brake pads need to be replaced, or it could also include the rotors and/or calipers.

A word of advice:  Remember that the best course of action is to take care of a needed brake repair before the safety of your vehicle is compromised!
