How Often Should You Get Your Brakes Serviced?
Many drivers often jump into their cars and take off without giving a thought about the condition of their brakes. Only when they find themselves sliding to a stop at a red light do they realize just how important good brakes really are! Don’t wait until you’re faced with a costly brake repair, or worse yet, be the cause of an accident before checking out the condition of your brakes.
Here is a quiz that will help you determine how good (or how bad) your brakes are. When you step on the brake pedal…
- How far does your vehicle travel before it comes to a complete stop? The pads have worn down too thin.
- Your car pulls to a side? A caliper is probably stuck.
- Does the brake pedal pulsate or vibrate as you step on it? The rotors may have become warped from repeated overheating.
- Does the steering wheel vibrate? The rotors may need to be “machined” or smoothed out, or possibly it is time to replace them.
- Is there a squealing sound? Squealing could be caused by pads that are too thin, the rotors need to be smoother out, of the braking components are of inferior quality.
- Do you hear grinding? There is metal-on-metal contact between the brake pads and the rotors.
Service Tip: To prevent a major brake repair, have your brakes inspected about every other oil change, especially if it has been a while since you’ve had them serviced. Don’t compromise the safety of you and your passengers, or other motorists because of failing brakes.
