Some drivers think that as long as their car gets them from point A to point B, everything is fine and they don’t need to worry about what may be going on under the hood. It’s a fact of life that even with the best vehicle maintenance, whether under normal or severe driving conditions, all vehicles will wear out.

The questions many drivers ask are how often should you schedule car maintenance, and what kind of vehicle maintenance is necessary? Look over the vehicle maintenance schedule listed in your owner’s manual and then discuss it with your auto mechanic to confirm what needs to be done on your vehicle.

So how often should you schedule car maintenance? The guideline below is a general starting point, but you should compare it with the schedule listed in the service manual. Of course, if problems arise earlier than the general mileage guidelines, don’t put off having the necessary repair taken care of. Every. . . .

  • 3,000—7,000 Miles.  Change the oil and filter. Check all fluids (transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid), windshield wipers, tires, and lights.
  • 15,000—20,000 Miles. Replace the air filter and inspect the condition of the battery and coolant mixture in the radiator.
  • 25,000 miles.  Replace the fuel filter.
  • 30,000 miles. Replace the air filter and power steering fluid. Inspect the HVAC system, brake pads, and suspension components.
  • 35,000 Miles.  Replace the battery if it keeps loosing its charge or if it is getting close to the four-year-old mark.
  • 40,000 Miles.  Replace the spark plugs and wires, and have the starting and suspension systems thoroughly inspected.
  • 60,000 Miles.  This is a major mileage interval for several items, including brake pads and brake fluid, radiator hoses, coolant, power steering fluid, and timing belts. The engine, transmission, radiator, and suspension components should also be inspected and any necessary repairs are taken care of as soon as possible.

Remember:  Keeping up with the schedule of vehicle maintenance has several benefits: optimizes the resale value of your car, helps prevent expensive repairs, averts possible roadside breakdowns, and increases the driving safety of your vehicle.
