Tired of Tire Repair?
If you’re tired of tire repair, it may be time to purchase new tires. It’s inevitable that even with regular tire service, such as checking the air pressure, tire rotation, wheel alignment, and balancing, tires wear out! Unfortunately, many drivers wait as long as possible before putting out a major investment in new tires, while being “nickeled and dimed” with inefficient tire repair.
Here are five symptoms to look for that can help drivers determine when new tires are necessary:
- Tread depth is less than 1/16th of an inch – If there is less than 1/16th of an inch tread depth, go to a tire service center and ask about purchasing new tires. If you regularly drive in wet or slick conditions, more is safer.
- Treadwear indicator bars – As the tread wears down, these bars gradually begin to appear as flat rubber bars running perpendicular to the direction of the tread itself. If more than one or two of these are visible, the tread is getting too low.
- Tracks or cuts in the sidewall – If you see grooves or cracks in the sidewalls it could be an indication that an air leak is developing, and your tire could be getting ready to blow! Take your car to a tire repair technician as soon as possible.
- Bulges or blisters – These are signs that the tire is beginning to weaken. This weak spot can cause a sudden blowout, resulting in loss of control.
- Extensive vibration – There can be any of a number of causes of excessive vibration, but it could indicate an internal problem in a tire. However, even if the tire isn't the root cause, the vibration can damage tires. Don’t put off scheduling a tire service to determine the cause of the vibration.
Note to Remember: Have a tire service before something goes wrong! Have a safe summer!
