Vehicle Maintenance Facts!
Most do-it-yourselfers love to pass on car maintenance information to other drivers that could be costly and potentially dangerous if not properly researched. Rather than spend a few extra dollars at an auto shop for professional vehicle maintenance, many vehicle owners try to take care of some jobs themselves. It's worth the cost in time and money to ensure peace of mind regarding the drivability and safety of your vehicle.
Here are five simple facts to know about vehicle maintenance:
Fact #1 β Have the air filter changed on schedule even if it doesn't look dirty.
Filters can trap dirt that is so small it can't be seen. Even if the filter looks okay, it can be clogged and the engine can't breathe. Check your owner's manual for the vehicle maintenance schedule for replacing an air filter, which is easier and less expensive than an engine repair.
Fact #2: You can't tell by looking if your tires have the correct air pressure.
Air pressure can be as low as much as 10 psi before showing any outward sign. Tires can lose up to one pound of pressure per month, so make sure to have the air pressure checked on a regular basis. Under-inflated tires will wear out faster and decrease your gas mileage as a result of the increased rolling resistance.
Fact #3: Make sure the engine coolant is kept clean and fresh.
The chemicals in engine coolant can become corrosive over time. Unseen and expensive damage can be occurring in the cooling system even though the fluid looks okay. Make sure the engine coolant is clean, prevent an overheating engine.
Fact #4: Brake fluid should be changed if it's not clear and transparent.
If brake fluid is cloudy, it's time to change it. Brake fluid tends to absorb moisture from the air, so eventually, this moisture will cause damage to the braking system.
Fact #5: You don't have to use premium fuel--regular works!
Premium fuel doesn't mean premium fuel performance. There are actually fewer high-performance cars and trucks today that actually require premium fuel. Don't pay for premium fuel unless your vehicle's engine was built to use extra octane.
