With winter creeping up, it's time to head to your preferred auto center to check up on some of the vehicle maintenance items you've been putting off. Your auto shop will be happy to help you make sure your car is ready for whatever winter brings.
Before winter strikes in full force, give some needed attention to the following vehicle components:
- Battery and Charging System: A fully charged battery can be the difference between getting to work on time or being stuck out in the cold. Your auto shop's technicians know how to make sure your car battery will last through the cold temperatures or if a replacement is necessary.
- Drive Belts and Engine Hoses: Frayed or cracked belts should be replaced and leaks and lose hoses should be repaired.
- Tires: Winter temperatures regularly get below 45 degrees F in most areas of the country. This affects rubber not specifically formulated for the cold, including "all season" tires, reducing tire performance substantially. The specially formulated tread rubber in winter tires is recommended for the best possible traction and handling. Also, don't let the tread depth get less than 3/32 of an inch. Remember also that tire pressure goes down as the temperatures get colder so check the tire pressure levels frequently. Your auto shop's service professionals can make recommendations specific to your type of vehicle.
- Lights: Make sure all lights (turn signals, headlamps, taillamps, foglamps and etc.) are working properly. If bulbs are burned out, check with your auto center for the right replacement.
- Wiper Blades/Washer Fluid: If you see streaks or spots on your windshield when it rains, it's time for a new pair of wiper blades. Check the wiper fluid frequently and keep the reservoir filled. If you visit your auto shop for other maintenance issues, have them check the fluid level and top off as necessary.
- Brakes: Brakes play a big role in occupant safety, and even more so in messy weather. Take your car into an auto center to make sure all brake components are functioning properly and problems can be addressed.
Last, but not least, carry an emergency road kit containing the following items:
- Sand or salt/traction mats
- Snow brush/ice scraper, shovel
- Jumper cables
- Windshield washer fluid
- Flashlight with spare batteries
- Cloth or paper towels
- Gloves, hats, blankets, and extra clothes
- Flares or other warning devices
- Non-perishable food and drinking water
- First-aid kit and basic toolkit
- Mobile phone with car charger, preloaded with roadside assistance phone numbers.
