There comes a time when every vehicle may need some form of engine repair. The first question every driver should ask themselves is whether or not they have been keeping up with the recommended engine service items listed in their vehicle’s service manual. If their answer is “yes,” their engine repair may be a minor issue. But what will happen to their engine if regular service is neglected? Does their vehicle lose power when stepping on the accelerator? Does the engine idle rough or stall at red lights? Does the “check engine” light keep flashing?
So just what are the causes of engine failure? There are three big reasons:
- The engine is not being lubricated: The oil pump could be bad, or the oil and filter may not have been changed frequently enough.
- The engine keeps overheating: There may be a coolant leak (from the radiator, hoses, or engine), the water pump has gone bad, a faulty electric cooling fan, or a bad thermostat.
- Detonation: Detonation, abnormal combustion inside the engine which produces excessive hear and pressure in the combustion chamber, is often indicated by a pinging sound that can sometimes be heard during acceleration. Detonation can also result from poor ignition timing, bad spark plugs, using low octane fuel, or an overheating engine. Take care of these problems as soon as possible to prevent major engine repair, or worse yet, complete engine failure.
Talk to your mechanic to find out how to avoid the problems above. Or if you are already experiencing engine problems, find out what engine repair options are available that can restore performance to your vehicle.
A word of advice: Keep up with the recommended schedule for engine service. It’s far less costly than a major engine repair!
