Wondering What Happens When You Get a Tune Up?
Is your car losing power when trying to go up a hill or when you’re trying to pass a slower vehicle? Is a warning light flashing on the dashboard panel and you don’t know why? Your car has been working hard during these hot summer days so it may need a little extra attention before we head into fall and winter. It may be time for a car tune up!
The best way to find out what is wrong with your car is to ask your auto repair technician to run a car diagnostics. This is conducted on a specialized computer that scans the computer processors, microchips and sensors built into today’s modern cars. Your mechanic can read the codes which are stored in the vehicle’s memory system and pinpoint the problem. This saves a lot of time and money troubleshooting--you don't have to pay for repairs performed on a "trial-and-error" basis.
The tune-up checklist should include an inspection of the engine, an analysis of your vehicle’s performance, and any needed adjustments made to the operating systems. Here is a short checklist of what happens when you get a tune up:
- Spark plugs replaced
- Fuel pump and filter replaced
- Fuel injectors cleaned or replaced
- Timing adjusted
- PCV valve cleaned or replaced
- Points and condenser cleaned.
Even with today’s newer cars and advanced technology, vehicle manufacturers still recommend a tune up service at around 100,000 miles. There is not a one-size-fits-all car tune up procedure but is uniquely based on your vehicle’s age, the number of miles driven, and its maintenance history.
