After making it through summer's hot temperatures and your busy fall schedule, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter's cold temperatures, especially if you plan on traveling to colder environments. A good place to start is with a needed radiator service. One of the most important issues to remember is to check the level and mixture of antifreeze. To keep your vehicle operating at optimum performance in freezing temperatures, schedule a radiator repair service to make sure the antifreeze is at its most effective mixture.

Is "Antifreeze" really important?

Antifreeze, also called coolant, is the colored fluid (usually green or red) found in your radiator. Radiators are normally filled with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. Antifreeze has four main purposes:

  • To keep the water in your radiator and engine from freezing in cold temperatures.
  • To keep that same water from boiling over in the summer, and
  • To lubricate the moving parts it comes in contact with, such as the water pump.
  • The key chemical component in today's coolants is ethylene glycol, a chemical additive that lowers the freezing point of a water-based liquid. When mixed correctly, this can keep your radiator fluid from freezing even if the temperature is less than 30 degrees below zero! It can also keep the same fluid from boiling at as much as 275 degrees F.

Maintaining the effectiveness of antifreeze/coolant!

Once antifreeze (also referred to as coolant) has been mixed with water and put into use, it periodically needs to be maintained and refreshed. If the antifreeze/coolant leaks, or boils, or if the cooling system needs to be drained and refilled, the freeze protection may have been compromised. In colder environments, more antifreeze and less water may be required. Most automotive manufacturers recommend the periodic complete replacement of the antifreeze/coolant to renew corrosion inhibitors and remove accumulated contaminants.

Don't wait for a winter snowstorm before scheduling a radiator service. Taking care of it early on can prevent engine damage from occurring and a major radiator repair down the road.

As well as checking the anti-freeze mixture, it is important to have any necessary radiator repair taken care of before heading to colder climates.
