This time of year it seems that many people report that damage to their car windows and doors is due to vandalism. Their busy schedules are then interrupted by looking for quick car repair. Fortunately, most car service centers are happy to provide fast and efficient car repair to help vehicle owners who have been a victim of vandalism.

Here are a few things you will want to do if you have been a victim of vandalism:

  • Contact your local police department to determine if a vandalism report needs to be filed.
  • Contact an auto shop for car repair and protect your vehicle from further vandalism.
  • Contact your insurance company if you have damage to your vehicle or consult with them about property losses.
  • If your wallet has been stolen, contact your bank to cancel any bank, credit cards and/or checks. Consider creating a fraud report with the three major credit agencies.
  • If your keys were stolen, consider changing the locks on your home.
  • If your cell phone was stolen, contact your service provider.

Here are a few things you can do to help prevent vandalism in the future:

  • Valuables left in plain sight in your vehicle invite vandalism. Don't leave anything of great importance inside the vehicle, even when parked in your driveway or garage.
  • Keep a copy of your driver's license, bank cards and credit cards, passport or any form of identification at home in a safe place.
  • Create a list of the items generally carried in your wallet or purse to keep with your other documents.
  • Park in well-lit areas, and as close as possible to lighted doors and windows.
  • Always lock your car doors.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and use common sense.
  • Ask your local law enforcement agency for additional ways you can help prevent vandalism.
Remember: Don't delay in having the necessary car repair (such as windows, doors or trunk locks) taken care of for your safety and protection. The longer you wait to have a car repair, the more likely the problem will get worse.
