Tire Service: Small but Important!
Anyone who has driven a car for very long knows that the correct inflation pressure is very important. If it is over or under the correct psi, they will notice steering problems. Attention new drivers: checking air pressure is a vital tire service! The correct inflation pressure will not only extend tread life, and stay under the warranty guidelines, but most importantly, will improve the steering and control of your vehicle. You can help prevent an inconvenient tire repair, but mostly, you can help prevent an accident!
Here are three issues describing the importance of correct air pressure:
- Under-inflation -- Underinflation by only 6 psi can reduce your tire's tread life by as much as 25% and reduce fuel economy by up to 5%. A low tire allows more tread to touch the surface of the road, increasing the resistance and build-up of internal heat. This significantly impacts your steering precision and cornering stability. If the air pressure is consistently too low, a simple tire repair may be needed to fix a slow leak.
- Over-inflation – In the reverse, over-inflation by only 6 psi will make your ride feel stiff and harsh. You will feel every bump in the road and if you hit a deep pothole, damage can more easily occur to the wheels. Over-inflation does not improve steering response or cornering stability.
- Time and Temperature – Because air escapes through the rubber as it stretches, your tire can lose about 1 psi per month. Changes in the outside air temperature can cause inflation pressure to fluctuate at a rate of about 1 psi for every 10°F. Over a few months, you will start to experience under-inflation problems.
A Tire Service Tip: About once a week BEFORE driving your vehicle, check the air pressure. You can not only prevent an inconvenient tire repair down the road, but you will retain the safety performance of your vehicle!
