If your muffler announces your arrival somewhere before you actually arrive, that can be an embarrassing situation. Is it hard to gain power when accelerating, or do you smell a strange odor when you start your car? These can be dangerous situations. Maybe you notice that the “check engine” light is constantly on. Any of these problems are commonly associated with a leak in the muffler and exhaust system.

Some drivers do not understand the function of the exhaust system. Simply stated, a properly working exhaust system releases the toxic gas by-products of internal combustion through the muffler out into the atmosphere and is vital for the operating efficiency of your vehicle. With a lifespan of about five to seven years, the muffler should actually operate quietly in the background.

What causes a muffler to go bad, you ask? There are several factors that can cause mufflers to develop problems prematurely, such as:

  • Exposure to salt—either from the salt spread on icy or snowy roads or by being driven consistently near an ocean;
  • Poor road conditions—Hitting speed bumps, potholes, or other obstacles in the road too hard, or being driven on gravel roads on a consistent basis;
  • Custom fabrication on the exhaust system that exceeds the capability of your vehicle to handle it.
  • Rust can develop in the muffler due to condensation that collects from water vapor and doesn’t have time to evaporate.

Important Note: Have the muffler inspected at each oil change to make sure there are no leaks or rust! By the time you notice a problem, it will already have reached a point where some type of repair will be necessary. Neglect will only cause the problem to get bigger, more costly, and possibly compromise the safety of your vehicle.
